How to Wash Your Nipple Covers

Okay so, I know that a post called "how to wash your nipple covers" may seem oddly specific. And, it is. But here's the thing: some people don't even realize that you need to do this.

Or, they think you can just rinse them with water and put the plastic back on (you can do this, but they don't really get clean that way). Or, even worse, they don't put the plastic back on after, and the adhesive on the nipple covers dries out.

Here is what you need to do to maintain your silicone nipple covers so that they last longer and stay in good shape:

1. Peel the nipple cover off gently from your skin from the very edge, making sure that the thinnest part doesn't fold over on itself.

2. Hold the nipple cover in the palm of your hand, adhesive side up.

3. Wet the nipple cover with enough water to blend well with the soap you will use. Don't run rushing water from the tap directly over it; instead, put your tap on the weakest drip you can get it and slowly fill the cover with the water.

4. Now, take a mild liquid soap or shampoo with no added moisturizers or other ingredients, and apply a few drops on top of the water.

5. Blend the liquid soap and water with your finger, gently over the top of the nipple cover, in circles.

6. Turn the nipple cover sideways under the tap.

7. Run the tap water over the nipple cover, making sure to rinse it thoroughly.

8. Leave your nipple covers face up to dry, just long enough so that you don't see any drops of water on them.

9. Put the plastic back on top of each nipple cover.

10. Put the nipple covers back in the box, so that they maintain their shape.

Do this every time after you have worn the covers. If it seems like too much work, well... then you probably want the cloth disposable kind instead. Silicone needs to be taken care of.

Another thing worth thinking about, before you even buy your nipple covers, is whether or not they will match your skin tone; and, how much you need them to match it exactly. It's unusual to get an exact match, so don't expect them to be completely invisible, but you can get an approximation. Focus on what undertones your skin has, and what color your areolas are.

You may or may not be able to tell the actual color of nipple covers from a pic online. That's not a reliable way to tell, so look based on undertones: yellow/green/gold, or pink/blue. The covers will blend better with your skin if you get the right undertone, no matter how dark or light your skin is. But, obviously you also want to look at how dark your areolas are. Very dark areolas will be covered better by a darker shade of nipple covers. For very light ones, you'll be able to match more to the skin surrounding them.
